A quote that inspires me

Today was Day 20 of the 21 Days of July #teacher5aday initiative, to tweet a quote that keeps you motivated. The quote I have selected is based on Marianne Williamson’s famous passage from her book A Return to Love. It is pinned to the wall of my form room and I often refer to its principles with my pupils. It reminds me of this great post by Nick Dennis quoting Thoedore Roosevelt. Coincidentally Nick re-tweeted a link to this post earlier in the week and is, I know, a fan of the film Coach Carter that also uses the quote . As the contrarian that I am, I have edited the original wording of the quote. Below is my version:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people the permission to do the same.”
